MALINIUS NEWS: Univ Nevada-Reno's PUSO to Host 2 Screenings for Brown Soup Thing

Following a successful tour of Florida that left fans clamoring for more, the cast & writer/director of acclaimed Filipino American film aim to satisfy demand in Nevada with two shows at the University of Nevada-Reno in association with PUSO (Philippine Undergraduate Students’ Organization). Actor Earl Baylon (The Tonight Show) and writer/director Edward J. Mallillin scheduled to attend both screenings.

Reno, NV – The demand to taste that indie-hit sensation called Brown Soup Thing just keeps growing.

The University of Nevada-Reno’s PUSO (Philippine Undergraduate Students’ Organization) is bringing the acclaimed feature film to the Joe Crowley Student Union (at UNR) this Sunday, April 11^th at 11:15 am and 2:15 pm as it prepares to kickoff its annual API Heritage Week.

Actor Earl Baylon (The Tonight Show) and writer/director Edward J. Mallillin will be in Reno to greet fans.

“PUSO UNR is ecstatic about bringing Brown Soup Thing to our university. Our club strives to heighten Filipino cultural awareness on campus, and this film will bring us closer to bringing more diversity to the students and community,” said Jeni Casteneda, PUSO President. “Many first generation students and Reno-ites born in the U.S. will relate to feeling incohesive with the mindset and background that their parents experienced previously in the Philippines. Brown Soup Thing will be a fresh outlook on what it is to be Filipino American. We can’t wait to see this film!”

Expecting a large turnout, PUSO added a second screening to accommodate expected attendance.

Student tickets are $4 and general admission is $6. Tickets are available at the door, or through pre-sale with PUSO members or via Brown Paper Tickets.

“We’re so grateful to Jeni Casteneda and the entire PUSO family for their interest in bringing the movie to Reno,” said Mallillin. “All of the colleges we’ve worked with have been so kind to us, I can’t wait to see our friends in Reno.”

Reno fans were excited to learn that Baylon would be attending the shows. In addition to his hilarious work on Brown Soup Thing, Baylon is also Mallillin’s co-star on the internet series Flipped Switch. He can be seen performing across the country with the comedy troupes Room To Improv and Projekt Newspeak and has performed with Conan O’Brien on The Tonight Show.

Brown Soup Thing is a comedy-drama about a comfortably disconnected Filipino American family. In order to raise her unacceptable A- average, 10 year-old Lita must submit a video project about what it means to be a Filipino in America. Her upcoming birthday provides the perfect setting to unite everyone: parents who can't relate to their kids, immigrant sister Fely, always-guilty over-achiever brother Jude, hip-hop sister Maria, an array of cousins, her grandmother who just wants to cook, and favorite sister Shana, who moved out of the country to get away from everyone.

Brown Soup Thing features 2-dozen special appearances by some of the most recognizable Filipinos and other Asians in the world. Among them: 7-time World Boxing Champion Manny Pacquiao, internet star Christine “HappySlip” Gambito, Filipino stars Raymond Bagatsing and Bernardo Bernardo; singers Becca Godinez and Anthony Castelo; and popular Asian-American comedians Paul “PK” Kim and KT Tatara.

Brown Soup Thing’s principal cast includes Kimee J. Balmilero (Hi-5, Miss Saigon), Jenilee A. Reyes (Deal or No Deal), Cheryl Noe (The Bold & The Beautiful), comedian Joey Guila (HBO’s P Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy), and Rona Par (The Flip Side). BST is also proud to introduce Earl Baylon (The Tonight Show), Wil Olandria (LA Forensics), and Nickelodeon’s Sari Arambulo, all starring in their first feature film.

Writer/Director Edward J. Mallillin is also the host and executive producer of the popular internet series Flipped Switch. While both his movie and show keep him busy, Mallillin is also preparing to direct his second feature film this May in Asia.

Brown Soup Thing is an official selection of Florida’s Delray Beach Film Festival, the Filipino International Film Festival Los Angeles, the Pacific Media Expo (PMX) in Los Angeles, the Chicago Filipino American Film Festival, and was the featured film at the UNLV FASA Screening Series and Asian American Student Union Week at the University of Florida.
